PostgreSQL, FirebirdSQL and MySQL(subjective view)
(Disclaimer: I am a PostgreSQL fan, this is my subjective personal experience)
Had a interesting experience with 3 of these DBMS’es.Needed to write an application that opperates on 7000000 row table.

It doesn’t tell people anything about what tests he did.
yes i agree , we should ask him to
give some details about the tests
database structure , machine , queries
and results
Read, calculate, update he says. Is it sounds as a task for stored procedure only to me? If calculations are too complex, he could write UDF for it. And he surely will be impressed with the results.
