Firebird related news
There is a project going on to measure the usage of Open Source software all over the world. People just download an utility who scan their machines, detects and reports the use of any recognized Open Source package (anonimously, of course). Right now, Firebird is not one of the recognized packages. This can be fixed if some “good soul” creates a Firebird “Fingerprint” and submit it to OSSDiscovery.
Seems that was an misunderstanding.

At present the PHP team can’t even BUILD a windows version of PHP5.3 and it’s this that has caused the problems 🙂
The Firebird 2.1.1 packages are now in ppa for Ubuntu Dapper, Gutsy , Feisty , Hardy and Intrepid Ibex

Jim Starkey, creator of InterBase, who was working for MySQL developing the Falcon engine, is leaving MySQL, probably to start some new technology.

Firebird 2.1.1 can be downloaded from prerelease area , I saw versions for linux/windows 32/64
The data center where the site is hosted suffered an explosion in the power room, and all the sites hosted there were offline for the whole Sunday and first hours of Monday. More information here. No information/data was lost.
Comparing the performance of several operations in FB2.1, OraXE and SQLServerXE using the vendor specific .NET data access drivers, I discovered Firebird was about 3 times faster than the others which were both nearly the same speed.
Firebird 2.1 will be included by default in the next Ubuntu release named Intrepid Ibex that will be released in 30 October.
