IBSurgeon: FBScanner 2.5 Pro and Community Edition are released

We are glad to announce the new version of our FBScanner tool. In version 2.5 we have significantly increased feature set, usability and performance of FBScanner. Customers with more than 100 concurrent connections use FBScanner for daily administration of production systems and during QA/development stages. FBScanner is the only tool which can intercept and log all Firebird traffic, and show it in suitable format.

As part of our development we continue to work at free Community Edition version of FBScanner, which is useful for debugging and testing purposes. Every Firebird developer who ever had questions like “What queries and transactions are performing right now in Firebird?” and “How do I know who is doing what.. in my Firebird?” should appreciate the variety of FBScanner Community Edition abilities.

Firebird mention on Log Buffer #145: a Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs

Here is the text from this version of Buffer #145

It’s time to nominate Firebird for CCA 2009, SourceForge’s Community Choice Awards, says Firebird News. Firebird is nominated for Best Project, Best Tool or Utility for Developers, and Best Project for the Enterprise.

On Free Database: The Relational Databases Blog appears an embedded Firebird database overview. It begins, “I was looking for a small and powerful database in order to fulfill the requirements of my last project. Because the database will be running locally I took the decision to use an embedded database. After a few searches over the Internet and some embedded database comparison reviews, I found Firebird which is actually a powerful but unknown (yet) relational database system.”

On Compas Pascal, Lars Dybdahl makes some observations on the real-life latency of a Firebird server.

Real life latency of a Firebird server

I just evaluated a switch of a Firebird server from a virtual VMware server to a physical server, and the results were stunning. I measured simple select SQL statements to a very small table, and on the virtual server, more than 90% of the queries finished in more than 20ms, and the median was between 20-30ms normally, and sometimes up to 80%. The 99% percentile was out of scale.

16 versions of Firebird and Interbase are now available for recording on 64-bit platforms via MS SQL Linked Server

Firebird and Interbase users implementing IBProvider drivers in their work last year were the first to take advantage of 64-bit applications. We have produced two more drivers in addition to 64-bit IBProvider v3: IBProvider v2 and IBProvider v1.

Firebird, Interbase and 64-bit MS SQL Linked Server

Due to 64-bit IBProvider v2 driver, 16 versions of Firebird and Interbase are now available for recording on 64-bit Windows OS via MS SQL Linked Server.

64-bit updatable rowsets in ADO

In addition to MS SQL Linked Server, there are many libraries and utilities that support updatable rowsets technology implemented only in IBProvider v2. One of such libraries is ADO library.

64-bit support in ADO and WHS allows to develop 64-bit automation scripts in VBScript language. For example:

  • Firebird/Interbase database automated administration scripts;
  • scripts for building reports, eporting to Office, XML, sending reports via email;
  • database backup, recovery, and replication scripts;
  • customizable business logic scripts in 64-bit applications;
  • etc.

With IBProvider drivers, writing of applications for Firebird and Interbase will become an easy and fascinating task.
We have made provision for the most difficult and will gladly share our technologies with you.

Firebird aquires NimbusDB

The aquisition was funded by Firebird Foundation. Firebird 2.1.3 will include cloud database features merged from NimbusDB, that was being developed by Jim Starkey.

In the other side, Jim will not join the project, and plans to spend the money buying  a bigger boat and sail around the world for the next 5 years.
