The good news is that the recently announced falcon storage engine should have a FULLTEXT engine that rocks. After explaining the situation a bit more, we decided that in the mean time a 64-bit MySQL with a ton of RAM is probably the only viable solution.
I finally bumped into Jim this morning at the MySQL UC and had a chance to talk with him. The initial conversation was about the meetup, which he gracefully agreed to come to sometime this summer (July/August). Beyond that was a great conversation about where MySQL is now, where Falcon fits in, and some of Jim’s ideas about a variety of things including DBAs, stored procedures, data types, and the SQL standard. He’s got some refreshing views on database technology and is an enjoyable person to talk with. This interview from 2003 captures a bit of Jim’s approach to database problems.
Firebird seems to be used in embedded area at siemens (amd mips processors) .

When working with Firebird in .NET I’ve been collecting Firebird errors and exceptions and their causes. It saved me a lot of time because the exceptions usually came again… I’m sharing my list here – if you have something to add don’t hesitate and add a comment.
All patches applied to the debian package of firebird are available on
[1]. The ones you’re looking for are gcc4.dpatch and gcc4+amd64.dpatch
I‘ve created the local Firebird list for Czech users. It’s running about half year.
