Marco Cantu posted in his blog some comments about the recent acquisition of MySQL by Sun. Among his considerations, Marco see this as a good opportunity to Firebird, a trully OpenSource project (and product):
I think this is another great opportunity for a truly open source and fully independent database like FireBird (and to a much lesser extend for InterBase)
Do you think that Firebird official site needs a facelift and be replaced with a new one, with a clear, professional attractive design? Please vote in our poll (look at the sidebar in the main page) and let us know.
A detailed explanation of the answers is:
Note: Depending on the results (yes x no), a complete survey with detailed “requirements” for the changes will be built and put online.
Post in ZDNet mentions Firebird. Check the excerpt from the full article:
There are many open source projects that offer respectable database technology including Axion, Firebird, MaxDB, PostgreSQL, Ingres and quite a number of others including an old friend, MUMPS (I was a software engineer at a company that created MUMPS-based solutions in the late Jurassic period)! If Sun tries to “squeeze” the users of MySQL, it is likely that these organizations will simply move to another platform and say goodbye to MySQL and Sun. Do you agree with my line of reasoning?

Marco has expressed his opinion about the actual relationship between Borland/CodeGear and Firebird in his blog:
As Carlos Cantu noted, it is very relevant that one of the InterBase engineers (Sriram Balasubramanian) blogged his congratulations. This gives me a good chance to reiterate something I mentioned many times on my blog, my hope that CodeGear (and the Delphi team in particular) will consider Firebird as a partner and not as a competitor of InterBase (the project Firebird was spinned off with Borland/Inprise original blessing). In my opinion, the key priority is to fully support Firebird in dbExpress with a specific driver, but official IBX support will also be nice to have.
