Firebird on Ubuntu Howto
Hi Rodney, I’ve converted your Howto to DocBook XML and generated an HTML
version: http://www.firebirdsql.org/manual/ubusetup.html
(DocBook source ubuntu-setup.xml is in the same directory.)
Some comments:
(1)
The product name is Firebird, not FirebirdSQL. I’ve changed that
throughout (except in the package label, of course).
(2)
This:
If you get an error message like “Statement failed, SQLCODE = -551
no permission for read-write access to database /usr/share/doc/
firebird2-examples/examples/employee.fdb” then you don’t have read
or write access to the database.
is not entirely correct. Since it concerns a Superserver installation,
the message means that the Firebird server process (running as user
firebird) doesn’t have sufficient rights. The solution is not to give
everybody read-write access to the database, but to check the file
ownership, change it to user firebird if necessary, and make sure he
(she? it?) has sufficient access.
With Classic server in local mode, it’s another story. But we
shouldn’t teach our users to solve access problems by just opening
all the gates to everybody.
I haven’t changed this yet though, because you may be aware of some
peculiarities specific to the Ubuntu installation that I’m not.
Kind regards,
Paul Vinkenoog

you can download from here
http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/276
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/nothanks.php?url=http://torrent.vmware.com/torrents/Firebird-Ubuntu-5.10.tar.bz2.torrent
I will upload on sf.net if needed
if doesn’t work please send them feedback about their servers
Thanks Mariuz. Those don’t work so I’ve sent their Webmaster a note. If it’s not too big a deal it would be great to get it from sf.net as weekends are the only time I get to work on this stuff.
Thanks
Mariuz I’ve been in touch with VMWare but they haven’t fixed the link yet nor have they replied to my request. Would you mind putting the file up on sf.net and sending me the link? Thanks. DR
seems that now it works
